英語が慣用表現の多い言語だという事は良く知られているのではないかな、と思います。ネイティブらしく英語を理解し、
話したり、学ぶためには慣用表現を学ぶだけでなく、自信を持って正しく英語を使えるようになるためにもイディオム
も他の事と同様に深く理解しないといけないですね。
しかし、ケンブリッジイディオム辞典にも載っている7,000以上のイディオムは、どれが日常の自然な会話で使われて
いるのかどうか知ろうとすると、とても難しいし、イライラしますよね。　
今回は私が日常良く使われる便利は尾ディオム15を例を使って説明したいと思います。

1) Time is money 時は金なり
時間はとても貴重なので無駄にするな、と言う意味ですね。

例文訳）2週間の休みは取れないな、「時は金なり」だよ。

2) Action speak louder than words 　「行動を見れば分かる」
口先だけより実践が大事という事ですね。
例文訳）あなた、いつも家の掃除するって言ってるのにまったくやらないんだから！　口先だけじゃなくて、行動して！！

3) As easy as pie 　簡単な、朝飯前の
「簡単でやさしいこと」です。
例文訳)　英語の試験なんて朝飯前よ！

4)Up against the clock　大急ぎで　時間にせかされて
仕事などを終わらせる時間が無いという事です。
プレゼンの期限が3時までなのに今2時だ！時間との戦いね！

5) Skin and bones 　痩せてガリガリの人
痩せていて見た目が病弱っぽい人の事です。
例文訳）最近ちゃんと食べてる？　骨と皮だけみたいよ！

6)Picture perfect 絵に描いたような
美しく完璧な人や物の事です。
うわー！見てホテルの窓からの海の眺め！まるで絵に描いたように綺麗だわ！

7) Bad taste 　悪趣味
　 センスの無い人の事です。
例文訳）昨日の彼女、オレンジの服に、ピンクのめがね、ゼブラ柄の運動靴だったわね、ホント、彼女って服のセンスないよね！

8) Bite your tongue 発言を控える　ずけずけと言わない　　誰かや何かについては必要にしておくと言う事です。
例文訳）父は私に「母のためにBMWを買う」と私に言った。よっぽど母に言おうかと思ったが、余計な事を言うのは辞めた。

9) Out of the blue いきなり　思いがけず　青天の霹靂
予想だにしない何かが突然起こると言う事です。
例文訳）昨日天気も良くて暑かったからビーチにいったんだけど、雨が降って嵐になったの。

10)At the top of my lungs　大きな声で（叫ぶ、キーキー言う）
例文訳）昨晩悪い夢をみて真夜中に大きな声で叫びながら起きた。

11)Out like a light すぐに寝入る　ぐっすり寝る
例文訳）昨日は20時間働かなければならなかった、家に着くなり、バタンキューだったよ。

12)At the drop of a hat 待ってましたと言わんばかりにすぐさま　
例文訳）ジョンはいつも

It is a well-known fact that English is a heavily idiomatic language. In order to learn, understand and speak English
as a native speaker, it is important to not only study these idiomatic expressions, but to have a deep understanding
of them as well so that they may be used correctly and spoken with confidence. However,
with the Cambridge Dictionary of Idioms citing over 7,000 idioms, it is difficult, and often frustrating,
for the English learner to know which idioms are currently used and appropriate throughout daily natural
conversation. In this essay, I will explain and give examples of 15 common and useful idioms.

1) “Time is money”. (My) time is valuable and important, so don’t waste it. “I can’t take a two week vacation. Time is money”.
2) “Actions speak louder than words”.
What you do is more important than what you say. “You always say you will clean the house but you never do! Actions speak louder than words”.
3) “As easy as pie”. Something is really easy and simple to do. “My English exam was as easy as pie”.
4) “Up against the clock”.
I do not have enough time to finish my work or assignment.
“I have a presentation due today by 3:00. It’s 2:00 now! Im really up against the clock!”
5) “Skin and bones”. Someone or something is really thin and looks sick. “Have you been eating recently? You look like skin and bones!”
6) “Picture perfect”. Someone or something is perfect and beautiful. “Wow! Look at the ocean view from our hotel. It’s picture perfect!”
7) “Bad taste”.
Someone has a bad sense about things.
“Yesterday she was wearing an orange dress, pink glasses and zebra-striped running shoes at the business meeting.
She has really bad taste in fashion!”
8) “Bite your tongue”.
You should be quiet and keep a secret about someone or something.
“My dad told me he is going to buy my mom a new BMW! I really want to tell her, but I have to bite my tongue!”
9) “Out of the blue”.
Something happens suddenly and unexpectedly.
“Yesterday, I went to the beach because it was really sunny and hot. Out of the blue it started raining and storming”.
10) “At the top of my lungs”.
Screaming or shouting. “Last night I had a bad dream and woke up in the middle of the night screaming at the top of my lungs”.
11) “Out like a light”.
To fall asleep quickly or immediately. “Yesterday, I had to work 20 hours. As soon as I got home, I was out like a light”.
12) “At the drop of a hat”.
When you do something immediately and suddenly without any preparation. “John is always ready to go fishing at the drop of a hat”.
13) “As blind as a bat”. Not able to see well or completely blind. “I’m as blind as a bat without my glasses”.
14) “Beat around the bush”. To avoid talking about what is important. “Stop beating around the bush and answer my question!”
15) “Light as a feather”.
Something or someone is very light in weight. “Your new laptop computer is as light as a feather. Where did you get it?”

With the understanding and correct usage of these common idiomatic expressions, English learners will be
able to communicate in a more practical way as they help language learners understand English culture,
customs and lifestyle. In addition, they are a large part of the English language and make daily
language use more colorful and fun!
