冬は普通寒くて憂鬱ですが、幸運にもクリスマスのようなイベントは
気持ちを高揚するのに良い時間ですね。

私にとってクリスマスはプレゼントあげたり、クリスマスの飾りつけをしたり、
クリスマスプディングを食べたりする季節です。

子供の頃、クリスマスの前にはいつもとってもわくわくしていました。
家族が飾り付けるクリスマスデコレーションが大好きでした。飾りつけはほとんど
がとても古く、使い古されていましたが、一家の習慣で何度も使われていました。
そしてもみの木の一番上には誇らしげに星が飾られていました。
クリスマスには新しいおもちゃやチョコレートををもらう約束をしていました、
そして食べすぎの結果良くおなかが痛くなったものです。

かなり大きな一族の出身だったので、幸運にも開けられるのを待っているプレゼント
が木の下に沢山置いてありました。　
開けても良いよと許される前に、時々中身が何か誘惑に駆られる
あのドキドキ感ってたまりませんでした。
よくプレゼントの包み紙の角をこっそり破いて中のおもちゃをちらっと
覗いて中身を見ようとしてました。

姉は私よりもひどかったんです。親がいないのを見計らって、完璧に、
しかもラッピングを破かずにプレゼントを開けてまた綺麗に
セロテープでラップし直してました。

子供としてもただプレゼントを貰うだけではなく、
サンタさんのプレゼントにお返しする責任がありました。
私の両親は私にいつもお皿に乗っけたビスケットとグラス一杯のウイスキーを
（もちろん父の大好きな！）サンタさんに用意させていました、
そしてサンタさんのトナカイのためにニンジンも用意していました。

大人になるにつれて、毎年クリスマスに(サンタさんのために)用意していた
ウイスキーはだいたい誰のためのものか察しがついてきましたが
、未だにニンジンは誰が食べていたのか、分かっていません！

Christmas

In winter when the weather is usually cold and miserable we are lucky
to have a time such as the Christmas period to lift our spirits.
For me it is a time for giving gifts, displaying decorations and
eating Christmas pudding.

When I was a child I would always get so excited just before Christmas.
I loved the decorations my family used. They were mostly very old ones
worn and torn but reused out of family tradition and it was always an honor
to place the star on the top of the tree.
Christmas held the promise of new toys, chocolates and the subsequent
stomach ache from eating too many.
Coming from a fairy large extended family I was lucky enough to
have many presents stored under the tree waiting to be opened.
Sometimes the temptation of finding out what they were before
I was allowed to open them was too great and I would try and
sneakily rip a corner to catch a glimpse of the toy inside
and try to figure out what it was.
My sister was even worse than I was.
When my parents were not around she would open her presents completely very careful not to rip the wrapping paper too much and
after discovering what they were she would re-wrap them using cellotape.
As a child I did not only receive presents
but I had the responsibility of making sure Santa had a present in return.
My parents always made me put out a plate of biscuits and a glass of whiskey (my father’s favorite of course!)
for Santa on Christmas Eve and some carrots for his hardworking reindeer.
As I grew older it wasn’t so difficult to guess what happened
to the whiskey each Christmas Eve but I never did find out who ate the carrots!

いや～、かなり寒くなりましたね！早いもので今年もあと数日を残すのみと
なりました。
皆さん、どんな一年でしたか？色々とあった2008年でしたが、
また様々な出来事は色々な事を気付かせてくれる良い機会でもあると思います。
一見失敗に見えても、一見成功したかに思えても・・・。
そんな1年だった気が、個人的にはしています。
それぞれ学んだ事を本当の意味で生かせるように、2009年は過ごせたらいいなとふと
思う今日この頃・・・。
皆さんにとってどうか良い一年でありますように、って早いか！笑
